**Hong Kong Observatory Issues First No. 8 Gale Signal of the Year as Super Typhoon Yagi Approaches**

On September 5, 2024, the Hong Kong Observatory announced its first No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal of the year at 6:20 PM, indicating expected wind speeds of 63 kilometers per hour or greater. By early evening, Super Typhoon Yagi was situated about 340 kilometers south of Hong Kong, moving west-northwest at approximately 15 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to pass near the Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan Island while maintaining its super typhoon status.

Meteorologists predict that Yagi will be about 300 kilometers southwest of Hong Kong by tomorrow morning. Gale winds are anticipated to affect the Pearl River Estuary from tonight into the early hours, with the No. 8 signal likely remaining in effect until at least noon tomorrow. Residents should prepare for heavy, squally showers as the storm's rainbands gradually move into the area.

The Hong Kong Observatory has advised the public to avoid coastal areas and refrain from water sports, as rough seas with significant swells are expected. In light of Yagi’s approach, residents are urged to secure loose items, ensure windows and doors are reinforced against high winds, and stay updated via official channels.

Transport services may experience disruptions, with potential delays and cancellations, including ferry services. Commuters are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly and stay informed about transport updates.

The Marine Department has temporarily closed the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal due to the No. 8 warning. Additionally, the Immigration Department has suspended services at designated Registration of Persons Offices during the warning period. Residents who missed appointments can apply for identity cards on subsequent working days without needing to reschedule.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has also advised the public to avoid visiting designated beaches to prevent accidents while the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 is in effect.
