Hong Kong Observatory forecasts five to eight typhoons in 2024 with higher temperatures

The Hong Kong weather watchdog said on Thursday that tropical storms anticipated to hit Hong Kong this year are between five to eight and the season of typhoons would commence earlier in June through October or beyond.

Also, the average temperature in 2024 is anticipated to be more than usual as this year may prove to be one of the 10 warmest years on record here.

The director of Hong Kong Observatory said “Extreme weather can become more frequent because of climate change. So Hong Kong citizens are reminded to get prepared for extreme weather, especially pay close attention to the weather forecast and warnings issued by the observatory and get earlier prepared".

The director added that better preparations would be made this year towards extreme weather as the observatory will use technology that can identify all sorts of precipitation and there would be also the replacement of the weather radar at Tai Mo Shan.

It was also promised that the HKO would make greater use of artificial intelligence to provide more timely and accurate forecasts going forward.
