Hong Kong MTR advises people to stand still on both sides of the escalator to avoid common accidents

MTR Corporation is trying to persuade Hong Kong people to stand still on both sides while using the MTR with no intension of retaining the left side for people in a hurry as more than 400 accidents were recorded in the first nine months of this year that involved MTR's escalators.

MTR Corporation said the latest data revealed that the risks associated with passengers moving while on escalators is alarming.

“With the changing times and an ageing population, walking on escalators and causing injuries may lead to serious consequences,” said Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, the company’s chief of operating and metro segment.

“It is safer to stand firm on either side of the escalator. We recognise that changing habits requires a collective effort, so we urge everyone to be considerate of themselves and others by holding onto the handrails and refraining from walking.”

The report said, more than 1,300 escalators serve millions of passengers every day at MTR stations across the city.

The rail giant logged 430 reports of related safety incidents in the first nine months of 2024.

About 60 per cent of them involved passengers who were not holding handrails, lost their balance while walking, were bumped by others or were carrying bulky items.

The company invited Hong Kong DJ and singer Jan Lamb to feature in the new promotional video for the “2024 Escalator Safety Campaign” and record station announcements.

Passengers have also been reminded to avoid standing close to the edge of escalator steps and be cautious when wearing long or loose clothing, such as scarves or shawls, that could get caught in the machinery.

The MTR Corp will deploy ambassadors at various stations in the coming month to help raise public awareness.
