2024-07-18 (Singapore) - Authorities in Hong Kong and Singapore have arrested a 25-year-old Hong Kong man in Singapore for allegedly trafficking approximately 4.15 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, worth an estimated HK$3 million. The drugs were hidden inside two lion statues.
The joint investigation began in late June when Hong Kong police suspected a drug trafficking syndicate had sent someone to Singapore to conduct distribution activities. The intelligence was shared with Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), who then monitored the situation.
On July 16th, CNB officers observed the 25-year-old Hong Kong resident delivering a suspicious package containing the two lion statues to a logistics company in Changi, Singapore. The man was promptly arrested on drug trafficking charges.
Examination of the lion statues revealed they contained a total of 4 packages of a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, weighing approximately 4.15 kg in total. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is around HK$3 million.
The arrested Hong Kong man is currently being detained for investigation. Under Singapore's Misuse of Drugs Act, trafficking more than 250 grams of methamphetamine can carry a mandatory death penalty.
