Hong Kong Honors 38 Bone Marrow Donors at 2024 Award Ceremony

On September 7, 2024, the Hong Kong Bone Marrow Donor Registry (HKBMDR), part of the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS), held its annual Bone Marrow Donor Award Ceremony to recognize the contributions of 38 dedicated donors. The event emphasized the crucial role of these individuals in saving lives and highlighted the ongoing need for more donors.

Dr. Ronald Lam, the Director of Health, officiated the ceremony alongside notable figures including Mr. Ignatius Chan, Chairman of the BTS Governing Committee, Professor Alice Chiu, President of the Hong Kong Marrow Match Foundation, and Dr. Tony Ko, Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Lam praised the altruism of the donors, stating, “These individuals have shown remarkable compassion by helping patients in need, offering them renewed hope. I encourage more citizens to consider becoming bone marrow donors to provide a chance for recovery.”

A touching moment occurred during the ceremony when donor Miss Chen met her recipient, Ms. Chang, for the first time. Ms. Chang, who has been fighting lymphoma since 2016, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Miss Chen, whose donation was pivotal in her recovery after a long search for a match.

Dr. Lee Cheuk-kwong, Chief Executive and Medical Director of the BTS, discussed the complexities of finding a match, explaining that the likelihood of matching with an unrelated donor is approximately one in five to ten thousand, and even lower for those with rare HLA types. He urged young people to register as donors to increase the chances of finding matches for patients in need.

Since its inception in 1991, the HKBMDR has registered over 177,000 individuals, facilitating hematopoietic stem cell transplants for 1,179 local patients and 132 overseas patients as of June 2024. Individuals aged 18 to 50 in good health are encouraged to register at any blood donor center, which involves completing a form, undergoing a health screening, and providing blood samples for testing. For more information, individuals can contact the BTS at 2710 1206 or visit their website at [www.ha.org.hk/rcbts](http://www.ha.org.hk/rcbts).
