Hong Kong High Court sentenced a 60-year-old man to seven years imprisonment on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to raping a girl 40 years back, police reported.
According to the police, the victim happened to be 13 years old when the incident happened. In 1983, the defendant allegedly followed the victim into an apartment in Tuen Mun where she was raped. He also took HK$160 and ran away, police said. However, in 1999, the victim died, police added.
Senior Inspector of Police, Darren Yeung said that despite. efforts to retrieve the man's palm prints at the crime scene, it was difficult for the officers to match them to available records until several years later when an improved computer system was introduced.
The senior inspector said "It was not until the upgrade of the forensic system in late 2008, which enabled computerised comparison work, that the police successfully identified the arrested individual and placed him on the wanted list.
Consequently, in August 2021, he was apprehended by a patrol officer," Yeung said.
"Regardless of how much has passed in cases, the police will remain committed to apprehending the perpetrators and bringing them to justice," he added.
