Hong Kong's top fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long has made history by successfully defending his Olympic foil title at the Paris 2024 Games. Cheung defeated Italy's Filippo Macch in a dramatic 15-14 victory on Tuesday.
Cheung, currently ranked third in the world, took an early lead in the match, building up a 9-6 advantage in the first period. However, Macch fought back to tie the score at 10-10. The two fencers continued to trade points, leveling the score at 11-11 and 12-12.
Macch then edged ahead, reaching match point at 14-12. But Cheung showed incredible resilience, scoring consecutive points to level the match at 14-14. The dramatic deciding point was met with multiple video reviews as the fencing machine indicated both fencers had scored.
Ultimately, Cheung was awarded the final point, successfully defending the gold medal he won at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. This makes Cheung only the third fencer in history to defend an Olympic foil title, after Italy's Nedo Nali and France's Christian d'Oriola.
Cheung's victory marks the second gold medal for the Hong Kong team at the Paris Games, after Vivian Kong Man-wai won the women's individual epee competition. Macch took silver, while Nick Itkin of the United States won bronze in the men's foil event.
