Hong Kong has experienced an unprecedented rise in temperatures as it approaches the New Year. The temperature reached a peak of 25.7°C, setting a new record for New Year's Eve since records began in 1884. This warm weather is unusual for this time of year and marks the end of an exceptionally warm year.
While Hong Kong enjoys the warmth, the coastal regions of Guangdong have experienced very little wind. The temperature soared past 28°C in 11 different districts of Hong Kong, with the Wetland Park reaching an exceptional 30°C. Yuen Long Park and Kowloon City were also quite warm at 29°C and 28.8°C respectively.
However, this warm spell is expected to be short-lived. A strong northeastern monsoon is approaching the southern coast of China and will bring cooler and windier weather. Meteorologists predict these conditions to persist throughout the middle and latter parts of the week.
The Observatory has informed the public to expect clear skies and dry weather in the evening, although visibility may be reduced. The light winds currently present are expected to strengthen and become moderate to fresh easterlies as the night progresses.
Looking ahead, the region is preparing for a significant drop in temperature. The influence of the renewed monsoon will cause morning and night temperatures in southern China to decrease noticeably. By January 4th, the minimum temperature is forecasted to drop to a chilly 15°C, a sharp contrast to the high temperatures experienced today.
