Hong Kong customs have discovered suspected crystal meth, also known as ice of 1.1 tonnes worth HK$640 million in a shipment of snail shells from Mexico. A seizure is said to be their largest in solid form yet.
The spokesperson for Customs and also the head of customs’ drug investigation group reported that four people linked to this case had been arrested.
According to the Customs, the container declared to have more than 600 bags filled with shells and was selected for examination on arrival because consignor’s location was a residential flat in Mexico, which was strange.
In custom's further investigation, the X-rays of the cargo indicated suspicious materials that led officers to inspect the container at the department’s Kwai Chung compound.
The drugs was concealled as snail shells coated with wax. Each piece weighs about 1kg with each bag carries about 10 pieces mingled with genuine shells, custom reported.
Customs said further that two men and a woman suspects from two logistics companies have been arrested and they were released on bail pending further investigation.
The cargo was said to be transported to a Sheung Shui warehouse before it was delivered to an industrial unit on Wong Chuk Yeung Street in the Fo Tan area of Sha Tin district on Saturday as per an order from the consignee.
In a follow-up by the plain-clothed officers to the consignment delivery address in Fo Tan, another 27-year-old man was arrested on Saturday. A rented industrial unit believed to be storing the illegal drug.
As of Monday, the man was still being detained on suspicion of drug trafficking. An offence punishable by up to life imprisonment and a HK$5 million fine.
