Hong Kong authorities say they have received 52 reports after people were trapped in elevators due to voltage drops

52 reports were made on Saturday due to a voltage dip across many districts in Hong Kong which caused some people to be trapped in the lifts, authorities said.

The Fire Services Department said multiple people were trapped in lifts in the Kowloon and New Territories with many calls made to the authorities between the hours of 12.28 pm and 1.13 pm.

“A voltage dip occurred in various districts at 12.28 pm, resulting in cases of people being shut in lifts,” the department said. “Power suspension may occur in the affected area. Members of the public should avoid taking lifts.” it was added.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) said it received notification about the incident at around 12.42 pm from CLP and immediately responded with the necessary actions.

According to the report, the preliminary investigation later suggested that a hill fire in Yuen Long’s Shap Pat Heung had affected overhead electricity pylons.

Authorities urged trapped residents to remain calm as firefighters were responding to the reports.

The department said at 2.40 pm that no more cases had been received.
