The death of a man who worked as a scaffolder in Hong Kong is being investigated after falling from a height while working at Stamford American School on Sunday morning.
According to the police, the accident occurred at 11.38 am at No 25 Man Fuk Road in Ho Man Tin, but did not mention the name of the international school where the accident happened. However, the institution is listed at the address given by authorities.
Police said the 49-year-old worker was said to have been likely to fall from four to five storeys.
“The man was a non-ethnic-Chinese worker. He was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital where he was confirmed dead,” a police spokesman said.
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made yet.
The Labour Department also stated that its staff had been sent immediately to the scene after the news of the accident got to them and was investigating.
The Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims said the worker was a Nepali man who was dismantling the scaffolding, according to the report.
“We were given to understand he had used a safety harness. As to why he fell, it has to be further investigated by authorities,” spokesman Martin Lau said.
“We are still trying to contact his employer.”
The organisation said the worker had a wife and two young children.
Association chief executive Fay Siu Sin-man said the man’s friends had mentioned he had started work at around 10 am.
“The work should have lasted no more than one day. He was there to dismantle the scaffolding. He was about to go to lunch around the time the accident took place,” Siu said.
