Health Department Delves into Singapore Headway Medicine Co's Shady Trade of Chinese Medicine

The Department of Health (DH) is conducting an inquiry into Singapore Headway Medicine Co, a licensed manufacturer of proprietary Chinese medicine (pCm) located in Kwai Chung, New Territories. The company is suspected of illegally selling and possessing an unregistered pCm called "Singapore Headway Goldboss Jiann Wey Jeng Charng Pill" with batch numbers 232491, 232492, 232493, 232494, and 232495.

The investigation was initiated after it was discovered that some samples of the product contained higher levels of arsenic than allowed by the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong (CMCHK). As a response, Singapore Headway has issued a recall for all batches of the product.

The DH launched the investigation as part of its efforts to monitor the market. It was found that the mentioned product was not registered as a pCm. The product label states that it is intended for relieving indigestion, gastrointestinal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhea, and cold symptoms. Initial findings from the investigation indicate that Singapore Headway, as the registration holder, did not manufacture the batches in question at the designated facility specified in its registration with the CMCHK.

Consequently, the batches in question were suspected to be unregistered pCm. Testing conducted by the Government Laboratory showed that certain samples contained approximately 1.7 times the maximum permitted level of arsenic according to the CMCHK's criteria for pCm registration. In response to these findings, Singapore Headway has taken proactive measures by initiating a recall for all batches of the related product.
