A Chinese woman reportedly invested 4 million yuan (S$754,000) in a Bitcoin project after being smitten by her online "boyfriend."

This was despite the fact that the 38-year-old teacher from Shanghai had received multiple warnings from the police that she had been deceived, Phoenix.com reported on October 6.

In a video shared by Chinese news outlets, the woman, surnamed Yuan, said a "handsome and rich" man promised her she would get rich by investing in Bitcoin.

According to reports, in the four months from November last year to March this year, Yuan used his house as collateral to borrow money from the bank and then transferred the money.

Police later learned of unusual activity in her bank account and tried to warn the woman that she might be the victim of a romance scam.

But Yuan lied that she used the money to buy discounted bags from the man.

"You have put more pressure on my life than being cheated on." On January 9, she said during her ninth meeting with the police.

However, Yuan began to suspect something was wrong when another woman warned her "boyfriend" on social media, China Focus reported.

On March 9, when Yuan met with the police for the 12th time, he tearfully told the police: "I don't believe that he will marry me."

A police officer from the anti-fraud team told the media that the woman's repeated denials were because she had invested too much money and emotion in this "relationship."

"She preferred to believe the police were liars," police added.
