Palestinian resistance movement Hamas announced a four-day ceasefire with Israel on Wednesday after 46 days of fierce fighting in the besieged coastal enclave. The agreement was reached through mediation efforts by Qatar and Egypt.
According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the cabinet has approved the ceasefire agreement. As part of the deal, Israel will release 50 hostages, including women and children, during the four-day ceasefire. According to the Times of Israel, 12 to 13 hostages are being released every day.
An additional 30 hostages are likely to be released, with each 10 released extending the pause in fighting by one day, the Times of Israel reported.
Israeli media Channel 12 News previously reported that if the agreement is approved, the first release of hostages is expected to take place on Thursday.
However, as reported by Israeli media, there is a 24-hour waiting period before the agreement is implemented, and Israeli citizens have the opportunity to appeal to the Supreme Court to prevent the release of Palestinian prisoners.
A senior U.S. official said Hamas asked for a pause in fighting to find some of the hostages, suggesting they may seek and gather more women and children for release.
Reuters reports that strict inspections will be implemented to ensure that Hamas does not exploit the ceasefire to acquire more weapons.
Additionally, officials hope the moratorium in fighting will extend to northern Israel, where Hezbollah and Israeli forces have clashed.
