Global Protests Erupt Over Indian Trainee Medic's Rape and Murder

On September 8, 2024, protests took place worldwide in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, India. Thousands from the Indian diaspora gathered in over 130 cities across 25 countries to demand justice for the 31-year-old postgraduate student, whose tragic death occurred at a government-run hospital last month.

The protests began in various locations, including Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Singapore, before spreading to Europe and the United States. This outcry adds to the ongoing protests in India following the victim’s murder on August 9.

Organizers highlighted the shock and horror felt by many in the community. Dipti Jain, one of the protest leaders, expressed, “The news of this heinous crime committed on a young trainee doctor while on duty numbed and shocked each of us.”

The victim had fallen asleep on a carpet in a seminar room after a grueling 36-hour shift, due to a lack of proper resting facilities. She was later found with severe injuries, prompting widespread outrage.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, hundreds gathered to demand accountability and safety for Indian women. In Dublin, California, protesters formed a human chain, holding signs that read "We demand justice" and "Justice for R.G. Kar." Participants of all ages recited poems and engaged in street theater, emphasizing the need for workplace safety for all.

In Stockholm, a group of mainly women gathered in Sergels Torg square, singing Bengali songs and holding signs. Despite previous reforms after a similar high-profile case in 2012, activists argue that such incidents continue to plague women in India.

India's federal police are currently investigating the case, but no charges have been filed yet. Recently, the country’s Supreme Court established a hospital safety task force to recommend measures for ensuring the safety of medical personnel.
