On January 9, 2025, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a cold weather warning, alerting residents to a significant drop in temperatures expected overnight and in the coming days.
Urban areas will experience temperatures falling to 12 degrees Celsius on Friday, with even colder conditions anticipated in the New Territories and on high ground. Saturday morning is expected to see temperatures plummet to 11 degrees Celsius, leading to frost formation in the inland areas of the New Territories and on elevated terrains over the weekend.
Historically, frost in Hong Kong is typically observed from December to February, with the last recorded instance occurring in Ta Kwu Ling on December 24, 2023. Residents are encouraged to dress warmly, as the wind chill factor in elevated areas may make it feel colder than the actual temperature. Special care should be taken to protect the elderly, who are more susceptible to the cold. Prolonged exposure to such low temperatures can lead to hypothermia.
The Observatory noted that an intense winter monsoon affecting inland Guangdong is set to reach Hong Kong’s coastal areas starting Thursday night, resulting in a drastic temperature drop.
