Islamabad - Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and his wife Bushra Bibi were indicted on February 27 on charges of alleged corruption. The indictment states that during Khan's premiership, they received land as a bribe. Khan, who is currently serving a jail sentence for other cases, has consistently denied the allegations. He had previously been convicted on corruption charges, resulting in his disqualification from participating in politics for a decade.
The trial took place within the premises of the jail where Khan is held. The couple pleaded not guilty to the charges. Despite the convictions and a crackdown allegedly supported by the military, Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured the largest number of seats in the parliament during the national elections held on February 8. However, opposition parties led by the Sharif and Bhutto dynasties formed a coalition government with a minority.
The recent indictment is connected to the Al-Qadir Trust, a non-governmental welfare organization established by Khan and his third wife, Bushra Bibi, in 2018 when he was still in office. Prosecutors claim that the trust served as a front for Khan to receive valuable land as a bribe from Malik Riaz Hussain, a prominent real estate developer and one of Pakistan's wealthiest and most influential businessmen.
The PTI party has strongly condemned the indictment, criticizing the trials conducted within prison walls, stating that they only serve to pave the way for a miscarriage of justice.
In a separate case, Khan and his wife were previously sentenced to seven years in prison for an unlawful marriage.
