Mainland authorities said the bodies of three people who went missing after a container barge hit a bridge in Guangzhou on Thursday morning were found, bringing to confirmed death toll to five.
State media reported that another two people were rescued and that one of those saved was slightly hurt.
The preliminary investigation came out that five vehicles including one motorcycle were on the Lixinsha bridge in the city’s Nansha district when it was hit by the empty ship destroying the bridge and creating a gap.
Two of the vehicles plunged into the river while three landed on the vessel that was wedged beneath the gaping hole.
The Guangzhou bus company said earlier that one of its drivers was alone in his vehicle when it fell off the bridge.
The captain of the cargo ship which was on its way to Nansha from Foshan’s Nanhai district – has been arrested, according to a Beijing News report that cited a local national legislature representative.

初步調查顯示，在該市南沙區立新沙大橋上，有包括一輛摩托車在內的五輛汽車被空船撞毀，橋樑被撞出缺口。
其中兩輛車墜入河中，三輛車降落在卡在大洞下方的船上。
廣州公車公司稍早表示，事故從橋上墜落時，其中一名司機獨自一人在車內。
據新京報引述當地人大代表的話說，這艘從佛山南海區開往南沙的貨船船長已被逮捕。
