European Parliament Supports Revocation of Hong Kong's Special Trading Status

The European Parliament has strongly endorsed a resolution calling for the European Union to revoke Hong Kong’s special trading status. This decision comes in response to the recent jailing of 45 opposition lawmakers on national security charges.

During a plenary session in Strasbourg, 473 lawmakers voted in favor of the non-binding resolution, while only 23 opposed it, and 98 abstained. The resolution also urged the European Commission to reassess the status of Hong Kong’s economic and trade office in Brussels.

Lawmakers reiterated their calls for targeted sanctions against Hong Kong's political leaders, including Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu. They also encouraged the 27 EU member states to consider filing a case at the International Court of Justice regarding China's imposition of the national security law on Hong Kong.

In response, the Hong Kong government dismissed the resolution, asserting that officials would not be intimidated by what they described as "barbaric and despicable acts." They criticized the European Parliament for allegedly interfering in China's internal matters and accused it of political manipulation and hypocrisy.
