A stern warning was made from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department official on Friday to be careful while visiting the monkey's habitats and not to look them straight in the eyes as it could be termed a threat, the report from RTHK interview.
The statement was made after a man tested positive for uncommon Herpes B virus and is currently in critical condition as a result of the sustained injury from a wild monkey attack at a country park.
The senior officer of fauna conservation Shek Chung-tong said further that people should stay away from the acts of feeding monkeys.
He said "Don't take out food to eat in front of monkeys. Instead of holding plastic bags, store them in a backpack. Because these monkeys were often fed by people, and they might think you are feeding them if you're holding food or plastic bags. They might try to snatch it from you if you don't give it to them".
Adding in his advice to "Avoid making eye contact with monkeys as it can be seen as provocative. Also, don't approach monkeys directly as it could scare them. They may overreact when they get scared."
Hong Kong got around 200 to 300 "monkey nuisance" cases within a year in the last three years, he said.
He said that officials will advance in educating people and make efforts to sterilise monkeys.
