A recent survey conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has revealed that approximately 2.5 million residents are considering emigration due to ongoing economic challenges. The poll, which involved 711 participants aged 18 and over and was conducted via telephone in October, found that 34.1% of respondents are contemplating leaving Hong Kong. This represents a slight decrease from the previous year.
Despite an increase in the average score of Hong Kong as a suitable place to live, which now stands at 60.8, many residents remain dissatisfied with local conditions. Key factors driving the desire to emigrate include poor economic prospects, political instability, and inadequate living conditions. Nearly 60% of those surveyed believe that the current wave of emigration could negatively affect the region.
Among those considering leaving, about 26.6% are actively preparing for relocation, which is a decrease of 6.6 percentage points from last year. The most popular destinations for those looking to emigrate include Australia, the UK, Canada, and Taiwan. Conversely, 61.8% of respondents indicated they have no intention of leaving, citing concerns about adapting to new cultures and financial stability as major reasons.
The survey also explored attitudes toward relocating within mainland China. It found that 20.7% of respondents are open to the idea, while 72.6% are not. The main reasons for considering a move to the mainland include lower consumer prices and improved living conditions compared to Hong Kong.
