Courageous Policewoman's Heroic Plunge to Rescue Drowning Woman in Sheung Wan

On the evening of August 6th, 2024, a dramatic rescue unfolded along the Sheung Wan waterfront in Hong Kong. Poon Hoi-lam, a female auxiliary police inspector from the Central District patrol team, courageously leapt into the sea to save a woman who had fallen into the water.

Poon, a seasoned athlete and second-generation policewoman, has balanced a multifaceted career - working as a sports administrator at the City University of Hong Kong, competing as a professional athlete, and serving as an auxiliary police officer. Her father's previous service in the Hong Kong Police Force inspired her interest in law enforcement from a young age.

On the night of the incident, Poon and her patrol team responded to a distressed call about a woman who had fallen into the water near the Western District Promenade. Upon arrival, Poon observed that bystanders had already thrown a life buoy towards the struggling woman. Assessing the challenging water conditions, Poon made the split-second decision to remove her equipment and dive into the sea to reach the woman directly.

Poon's quick thinking and bravery paid off, as she was able to pull the woman, who was rapidly losing strength, to safety. She calmly comforted the woman during the rescue, and the pair were eventually brought to shore by firefighters and paramedics, both unharmed.

"It was a very special situation that I had not encountered before, and I hope I never have to experience it again," Poon reflected. Despite the inherent dangers of police work, she finds the challenge and ability to help others deeply rewarding.

Poon's 19-year career as an auxiliary police officer has been marked by diverse experiences, from chasing down suspects to sprinting across the city. The flexibility of her role allows her to balance her various responsibilities, including her day job and sporting pursuits, while still contributing to the community.
