A couple, consisting of a 24-year-old man and his 22-year-old girlfriend, has been charged with the offense of preventing the proper burial of two baby boys. The accused individuals, identified as Lam Tsz-hon, a warehouse keeper, and Chau Ying-wah, a public relations employee, appeared before a magistrate's court in Fan Ling.
The distressing discovery of the infants, who were born in 2022 and 2023, came to light when cleaners, responding to rent arrears, found the babies soaked in liquid-filled glass jars in a unit rented by the couple in Mei Hang Building, Tuen Mun.
During the court hearing presided over by Magistrate Kenneth Chan Ping-chau, the couple faced charges related to the prevention of burial for both infants. It was alleged that Lam and Chau hindered the burial of one baby in 2022 at a zinc hut in Ha Tsuen, Tin Shui Wai, and the other baby last year in the Tuen Mun unit.
Although no pleas were taken during the hearing, the defendants reportedly confessed to the charges. They claimed that the incidents occurred at different times and places. The case has been adjourned until June 3 to allow for DNA tests to confirm the couple's relationship to the infants and for medical reports to determine the cause of death. These procedures are expected to take place over the next 12 weeks.
Initially, the police believed that Lam and Chau were the parents of the infants. However, further tests are required to establish their relationship. Both Lam and Chau are currently in custody and did not apply for bail.
The couple's bail status will be reviewed at a hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. No hospital birth records were found for the two boys, and a preliminary autopsy did not reveal any apparent injuries. The liquid in which the infants were immersed will undergo further testing.
Lam, who is reportedly linked to the Sun Yee On triad, has a history of involvement in drug trafficking and criminal intimidation. He has claimed to be a triad member. On the other hand, Chau has a clean record. If convicted of preventing lawful burial, the couple could face a maximum sentence of seven years.
