Hongkongers should brace themselves for cold weather during the winter solstice and Christmas period, as temperatures are expected to drop as low as 10 degrees Celsius.
The city's weather forecaster has announced that the winter monsoon will bring chilly and dry conditions to the southern coastal areas of China in the coming days. From Thursday to Monday, temperatures are anticipated to range between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius.

Furthermore, the conditions will be dry. In the urban areas, the minimum temperatures on the winter solstice are expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius, while they may be a few degrees lower in the New Territories.
The winter solstice, known as "dong zhi" in Chinese, represents the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, it signifies the "extreme of winter" and serves as a turning point towards longer days. Traditionally, this day is celebrated with family gatherings and the consumption of glutinous rice balls, known as "tang yuan," which symbolize prosperity and unity during the darkest time of the year.
