Updated: Jan 22, 2024

Hong Kong is preparing for a chilly weekend as a cold front is expected to sweep across the region, bringing significantly cooler temperatures. According to the latest forecast from the Hong Kong Observatory, on January 21st, the day of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, the minimum temperature is predicted to drop to 16 degrees Celsius, marking an 8-degree decrease compared to the previous day. Furthermore, on January 22nd, certain districts in Hong Kong are expected to experience lows of 10 degrees Celsius.

Residents have been warned by the Hong Kong Observatory to prepare for the approaching cold front and the subsequent drop in temperatures. The dry northeast monsoon is currently affecting Guangdong and will continue to do so tomorrow, with a strong and gusty monsoon expected to reach the southern coast of China later on Monday. Midweek next week, the region can expect strong winds.

As for the current weather conditions, today has seen brief periods of sunshine and dry weather. A gentle easterly wind has been blowing, gradually transitioning to a moderate offshore wind. Tomorrow is expected to have brief periods of sunshine as well. Monday will be warm during the day, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 24 degrees Celsius.

Looking ahead, next Saturday, January 20th, marks the Dahan solar term, and the Observatory predicts that temperatures on that day will range from 19 to 24 degrees Celsius, signifying a warm day. However, the Observatory also warns that a cold front is expected to pass through southern China during the coming weekend, leading to noticeably cooler weather in the region for several days.

On the day of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, January 21st, temperatures are expected to drop to 16-21 degrees Celsius, a decrease of 8 degrees compared to the previous day's high of 24 degrees.

By January 22nd, the Observatory forecasts that temperatures in the city center will further decline to 15-20 degrees Celsius. Regional predictions indicate that at 7 am on that day, temperatures at Tai Po and Sheung Shui will be as low as 12 degrees Celsius, while at Tat Kwa Ling, temperatures are expected to reach a low of 10 degrees Celsius.
