China Vows Countermeasures Against U.S. Visa Restrictions

On June 3, 2024, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced that China will take countermeasures if the United States implements visa restrictions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials.

The U.S. State Department had stated it would be imposing new visa restrictions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials over convictions related to the National Security Law trial of pro-democracy organizers in Hong Kong.

In response, Mao Ning said at a regular press briefing that China "strongly opposes exclusive blocks in the Asia-Pacific region." She warned that if the U.S. goes through with the visa restrictions, China will retaliate with its own countermeasures.

The escalating tensions come as the U.S. and China continue to clash over issues related to Hong Kong's political autonomy and human rights. China has firmly rejected U.S. criticism of its policies in Hong Kong, viewing it as interference in its internal affairs.

The war of words signals a further deterioration in U.S.-China relations, with both sides taking increasingly hardline stances and refusing to back down. Analysts expect the tit-for-tat measures to further strain the already turbulent bilateral relationship in the months ahead.
