China has hinted at the prospect of taking retaliatory measures after U.S. President Joe Biden signed legislation aimed at bolstering Taiwan's defense capabilities and pressuring TikTok's Chinese owner to divest from the popular social media platform.
The military aid package, signed by Biden last Wednesday, primarily provides support to Ukraine in its efforts to defend against Russia's invasion and also includes provisions related to Israel. Additionally, Biden signed a separate bill linked to the aid package that mandates the banning of TikTok in the United States if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, fails to divest the app within the next nine to twelve months.
Speaking from Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged the United States not to implement the "negative, China-related" aspects of the legislation. Lin warned that if the U.S. persists with its current course, China will take decisive and forceful steps to protect its own security and development interests. However, specific details regarding the potential retaliatory actions were not provided.
Despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties, the United States remains Taiwan's most significant international supporter and arms supplier. China, which considers Taiwan as part of its territory, has consistently demanded a halt to arms sales to the island. Taiwan's democratically elected government, which rejects China's sovereignty claims, has expressed appreciation for the new legislation, stating that it will contribute to maintaining regional security.
