Chief Executive John Lee Unveils Transport Promotions and MTR Discount for National Day

On September 17, 2024, Chief Executive John Lee announced a series of transport promotions, including a 25% discount on MTR fares, in preparation for Hong Kong's 75th National Day celebrations. This announcement follows a recent Executive Council meeting, marking the council's return after a two-month break.

During a media briefing, Lee discussed public feedback gathered during his visit to Wong Tai Sin regarding upcoming housing policies. He mentioned that the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau would assess the current conditions against the backdrop of the 2019 suspension of a "cooling-off period" for housing measures.

Looking ahead, Lee will lead a delegation to the 27th Beijing-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium from September 20 to 21, where they will engage with high-level officials, including a potential meeting with Xia Baolong, Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office.

As part of the National Day festivities, over 400 events are planned, including a flag-raising ceremony and a fireworks display. Noteworthy promotions include:

- MTR Fares: Octopus card users will enjoy a 25% discount on MTR rides.

- Bus Rides: Free rides for children on specific bus routes operated by KMB, LWB, Citybus, and New Lantao Bus.

- Star Ferry: Free rides from September 30 to October 2.

- Cinema: Half-price tickets available for residents on October 1.

- Dining Discounts: Approximately 3,000 restaurants will offer discounts, and over 10,000 public market stalls will provide a 25% discount.

The government aims to foster public engagement through specialty markets and drone performances organized by district councils. Lee also addressed concerns from the Hong Kong Journalists Association regarding threats to reporters, reaffirming the government's commitment to ensuring their safety.

In response to complaints from foreign workers about wage deductions, Lee announced the creation of a cross-departmental team to investigate and uphold labor regulations. He emphasized the government's focus on local employment while allowing the necessary influx of foreign labor to maintain a competitive job market.
