The cold spell is expected to persist for the next day or two, with the temperature in the urban area reaching 7°C tomorrow morning (January 24th). Several districts in the New Territories may experience temperatures as low as 6°C, while Taping Shan is expected to drop to 3°C. As the winter monsoon eases slightly towards the end of the week, temperatures are expected to rise over the weekend.
Tai Mo Shan, the highest peak in Hong Kong, recorded a frigid temperature of -2.4°C, with a thin layer of ice covering the leaves. The Observatory has issued a special weather advisory, warning the public, drivers, and cyclists to be cautious of slippery roads. The combination of rain and significant wind chill will result in a perceived temperature lower than the actual air temperature.
The strong cold weather warning and the cold weather signal remain in effect, with the Observatory predicting strong northerly winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour on average and gusts reaching gale force at times.
This morning, the temperature recorded at the Observatory Headquarters was 6.5°C, which dropped to 6.3°C by 7 a.m., breaking the record for the lowest temperature of this winter. The exterior walls of buildings on Tai Mo Shan have frozen over, with reports of ice formation on the walls and surfaces of plants. In the northern district, Ta Kwu Ling reached 4.2°C, Ngong Ping 1.3°C, and Tate's Cairn only 1.1°C. Several districts in the New Territories experienced temperatures below 6°C, with Sheung Shui and Tai Po reaching only 4.8°C and Tin Shui Wai at 5.4°C. Tuen Mun recorded 5.7°C.
