U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned on Sunday that the war in Gaza could spread and threaten security across the Middle East, during a regional visit aimed at de-escalating the conflict.
"This is a moment of serious tension in the region. This conflict could easily spread," Blinken told a news conference in Doha alongside Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. , causing more insecurity and more suffering."
The war began when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli statistics.
The militants also took about 250 hostages, 132 of whom remain in custody, according to Israel. At least 24 people are believed to have been killed.
Israel responded with a relentless bombing and ground invasion of Gaza that killed at least 22,835 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory.
Blinken warned that Israel "must" "focus on protecting civilians" and ensure operations are "designed around protecting civilians... and around getting humanitarian assistance where people need it."
Blinken said that amid the deepening humanitarian crisis and mass displacement in Gaza, civilians "must be able to return home as soon as conditions allow."
After two Israeli ministers suggested Palestinians should be encouraged to emigrate, he added: "They cannot and must not be forced to leave Gaza."
Blinken called the deaths of two Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza an "unimaginable tragedy," with the Qatar-based TV station blaming Israel for the incident.
"The same is true for too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children," he said.
Blinken arrived in Qatar after stops in Jordan, Türkiye and Greece.
