Beijing Urges U.S. to Comply with One-China Policy Amidst Taiwan Tensions

In a press conference held on January 31, 2024, a spokesperson from the Chinese mainland called upon the United States to actively demonstrate its commitment to not endorse 'Taiwan independence' through tangible actions. The spokesperson, Chen Binhua, who represents the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized the importance of avoiding any encouragement of separatist activities on the island.

Chen's statement was in response to comments made by Laura Rosenberger, the director of the American Institute in Taiwan, regarding the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758. Chen highlighted that this resolution, passed in 1971, along with other international agreements, unequivocally affirms the existence of only one China, with Taiwan being an integral part of it. The spokesperson emphasized that the resolution serves as a cornerstone of international relations and pointed out that the United States has recognized this principle in the three U.S.-China joint communiques.

According to Chen, it is essential to acknowledge that, under international law, Taiwan's status is solely as a part of China. Any misrepresentation or challenge to the authority of UNGA Resolution 2758 was described as misguided, malevolent, and destined for failure.

It is worth noting that tensions have been escalating between China and Taiwan. Against this backdrop, Beijing is calling for the United States to adhere to the one-China policy and take concrete measures to demonstrate its commitment against endorsing Taiwan independence.
