As a result of a powerful earthquake of magnitude of 7.6 that hit the Western part of Japan lately, at least two of Hong Kong's largest travel agencies have considered diverting or cancelling their earlier tours planned to Ishikawa prefecture because of the disaster.

WWPKG travel agency published on its Facebook page on Tuesday that all the January tour groups to Wajima in Ishikawa where the earthquake struck would be cancelled.

It was stated by the agency that the travellers can transfer plans, retain funds for future journeys or request full refunds.

At least 48 people have been reported killed and dozens injured in the quake that hit Japan’s central regions on the first day of the year.

Police and local authorities early on Tuesday reported cases of bodies being pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings while others remained trapped.

The Japan Meteorological Agency also issued a tsunami warning for Niigata, Toyama and Ishikawa prefectures, located along the Japanese coastline.

However, the warning was lowered on Tuesday morning.

The earthquake had consequently flattened the buildings, caused a fire outbreak and destroyed roads.

A 5.6-magnitude aftershock struck the area on Tuesday following the massive quake.

Additionally, Hong Kong’s Immigration Department on Monday said it had not received any requests for help from city residents in Japan.
