Around 160,000 passengers a day are expected to pass through Hong Kong Airport during the holidays

According to officials from the Airport Authority, Hong Kong airport is expected to handle up to 160,000 passengers daily during the Christmas holidays. The most popular destinations are Taipei, Shanghai, and Bangkok.

The top three destinations will have an average of 70, 54, and 50 daily flights respectively, which means there will be more than one flight every hour arriving or departing for these cities. Hongkongers' favorite destination, Japan, will have 44 daily flights between Hong Kong and Tokyo.

The Airport Authority anticipates over 1,000 flights per day in and out of Hong Kong, with 760 of them carrying passengers. They expect the traffic volume during the Christmas and New Year holidays to reach around 80 percent of the level before the pandemic. The executive director of the authority, Steven Yiu Siu-chung, stated that while the ideal situation would be a full recovery by the end of next year, it depends on the global economy. He mentioned that flight volumes are taking a significant amount of time to fully recover, and this is not unique to Hong Kong, as other cities like London, Singapore, and various locations in Europe are facing similar situations.

Yiu explained that the availability of aircraft, pilots, and cabin crew is a crucial factor in increasing flight capacity. Local airlines are actively training pilots, and ground staff resources have been gradually relieved, providing optimism to the Civil Aviation Department. However, Yiu emphasized the importance of maintaining service standards.

In terms of crowd safety management, the police will implement measures and traffic arrangements on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Temporary road closures will be implemented in stages, starting at 6pm on Christmas Eve around Kowloon and 2pm on Hong Kong Island. Various roads in Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon Cultural District, Hung Hom, and Lan Kwai Fong will be closed. Crowd control measures will be in place to prevent stampedes, and illegal parking will result in vehicles being towed away without warning.

The weather during Christmas is expected to be cold, with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees Celsius on Friday. However, it is forecasted to bounce back to around 15 to 16 degrees by Tuesday. The winter monsoon will continue to bring cold and dry weather to the coastal areas of southern China in the coming days, with temperatures expected to remain around 10 to 12 degrees until Christmas. The public is advised to stay warm during this period.
