An Indonesian traveller who boarded a plane from Hong Kong to Taiwan was not allowed to enter the country after she failed to pay an HK$48,430 (NT$200,000) fine for bringing along a lunchbox meal with roast pork, which was against their import regulations, local media reported.

According to the Taiwan local news platform on Sunday, the passenger landed in Taipei on the 30th of April with the lunchbox meal.

In a picture that emerged online, the meal included rice with a popular Hong Kong roast pork and soy sauce chicken.

Customs detected and the traveller was fined NT$200,000 immediately for the undeclared pork meal.

However, the alleged visitor was unable to pay the penalty at the time and was deported. The person was instructed to pay the fine before entering Taiwan again, reported the local media.

The authorities in Taiwan have earlier in 2018 imposed strict controls on the import of pork from areas where cases of African swine fever have been detected.

The fine for a first offence is NT$200,000, increasing to NT$1 million for subsequent transgressions.

An official from Taiwan’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency told local media that passengers could throw out any banned items they had mistakenly brought in using disposal bins before immigration control.

“You can dispose of them there or declare them at our animal and plant quarantine counters,” the official said. “Whether you choose to declare them voluntarily or dispose of them, there will be no criminal liability involved.”
