An elderly man fell and died inside 130 feet hole he dug by himself to hunt for gold underneath his building

A man in Minas Gerais, Brazil died after plunging into a 130-foot hole he dug below his kitchen floor for over a year chasing the dream that gold was buried beneath his building.

The unbelievable photos of the hole he dug which was around 35 inches in diameter, and ended up to be as tall as a 12-storey building emerged online and also in Brazilian media.

The local media reported that João Pimenta, 71, lost his balance on Thursday afternoon and he fell into his dug pit.

The man's neighbours told local media that following a “prophetic dream,” Pimenta had become obsessed with the idea that there was gold buried beneath his kitchen floor and had spent over a year digging for the treasure.

The local news said, one of his neighbours, Arnaldo da Silva had tried to advise the elderly man against digging the dangerously deep hole, but the man insisted, convinced he would reach gold if he continued his search.

The neighbour added that in recent days the man had also mentioned getting dynamite to blast a huge rock standing on his way to excavate.

According to the neighbour, Pimenta would also pay others to help dig the hole, increasing their rate of pay as the chasm grew deeper. Most recently he had paid others up to $500 to assist in his efforts, the report said.

The local police responded to his home on Thursday after a distress call. The elderly man’s body was taken to a medical centre for an autopsy. The rescue team found him to have suffered head injuries and broken legs as well as other fractures and was pronounced dead, the report said.
