An 80-year-old elderly Hong Kong man was found dead inside an MTR station toilet on Tuesday in an alleged murder-suicide attempt but his disabled wife suffering from dementia whom they found together survived.
Police arrived at the scene after a MTR employee at Shek Mun station in Sha Tin called at around 4.30 pm on Tuesday reporting that the couple was found unconscious in the MTR public toilet. The staff said the heads of both of them were covered by plastic bags and tied with strings.
The report said the 71-year-old wife was in the wheelchair with the man. The emergency services treated her and regained consciousness on the scene.
The two were rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin. However, the man was pronounced dead later at 5.22 pm while the condition of the woman was not said as of Tuesday night.
A police report that the man had allegedly covered the woman’s head with a bag and in turn to himself.
The woman was said to be diagnosed with dementia about 15 years ago and had recently moved into a care home, while her husband lived with their son.
On the incident day, the man went to take his wife from home for a walk, the report said.
According to the MTR Corporation, a staff member at the station was alerted around 4 pm when the alarm in the accessible toilet was triggered. The staff member immediately checked the toilet, unlocking the door after getting no response from knocking.
Police have classified the case as an attempted murder-suicide.
The Sha Tin district crime squad, which is investigating, also urged anyone with information to offer to contact officers on 3661 2723.
