Rizwan Ullah, one of the two ethnic minority representatives appointed as a Kowloon City district councillor said he will hopefully use his background as a Pakistani to care for his community after reassuming office.
Rizwan Ullah who is a secondary school vice-principal and also a member of the Equal Opportunities Commission won the election race as a councillor with a Nepalese community representative named Aruna Gurung.
Rizwan said in an RTHK interview programme today that he would be looking at the education aspect of the ethnic minorities, and local community education aspect altogether.
He said" With my background as a Pakistani, I would like to address other livelihood issues of ethnic minorities in the Kowloon City district...There's a sizeable population, so I hope I can serve them and engage their views and get their views heard in the district council."
He said the bringing back of appointed seats has given opportunities to the professionals and ethnic minorities in which he is included to be part of district councils.
Rizwan is one of the 179 people the government appointed to the district councils, with the line-up also including serving and former district councillors, as well as local professionals.
"This revamped system allows people like me, or even other local professionals, who would otherwise be not able to be elected, because some are professionals, they may not have that amount of time and resources to get the public vote. But their service, their expertise, their experience can create a better community-building," he said.
