A survey has revealed that Hongkongers are putting into saving a substantial amount of money to keep for times of need and their sense of security increases, according to the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board at the sixth annual survey on savings trends.

The study showed that the average monthly amount of people's savings went up to HK$9,000 this year from HK$7,700 it was last year and this happened to be a 17 per cent increase. This level was said to be the highest amount since the board began its surveys.

Connie Laus, the board chairperson said “After three years of Covid, people would like to go back to their old good life before the pandemic".  "Because of the experience they had during Covid, they are hoping to have more money, more usable money around them to save for a rainy day", she added.

The survey also revealed that Hongkongers’ sense of security improved from an initial 51.4 to 53.7 on a 100 scale as a result of their savings in the bank. This is the opposite of the last three-year decline record, the survey showed. It is moving forward and people aim to save even more, it was reported.

The survey revealed, “While only 20 per cent of the respondents have already set a savings target for next year, which represents a slight decline, their average targets have increased by 6 per cent to HK$183,000".

The survey further revealed that Hong Kongers think that they would have to save an average of HK$1.08 million a year to generate a sense of security that is firmly enough than the record of HK$590,000 last year.

The survey also recorded that young Hong Kongers aged between 18 and 29 are getting more proactive in saving money. It was discovered that HK$7,900 is being saved per month in 2023 in comparison with HK$5,000 last year.

The study also showed that full-time housewives are having more savings.
