A Singapore-flagged vessel struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday. Part of the span has collapsed, and an emergency response is underway, the authorities said, with people possibly in the water, reported from New York Times.
A major bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by a cargo ship early Tuesday, setting off an emergency response, the Coast Guard and the local authorities said.
The 1.6-mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge opened in 1977 as an outer crossing of Baltimore Harbor, over the Patapsco River, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority, its operator. The bridge is part of Interstate 695, an outer crossing of Baltimore Harbor.
Detective Niki Fennoy of the Baltimore Police said that the department had been notified of “a partial bridge collapse with possible workers in the water.” She said she had no additional information.
The water in Baltimore Harbor is currently about 48 degrees Fahrenheit, or 9 degrees Celsius, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hypothermia can occur in any water temperature below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The report said it was still not clear how many people were on the bridge when the cargo ship made an impact, or what happened to them. Johnny Olszewski Jr., the Baltimore County executive, said on social media that an emergency response was “ongoing.” He did not elaborate and could not be reached for comment.
Surrounding counties are now joining the rescue effort, including volunteers from the Harford County Fire Department, the report said.
