A crafty thief passenger on a Hong Kong Airlines flight robbed another passenger by swapping his Indonesian Rupiah banknotes for Hong Kong Dollar.

According to the report, a Hong Kong resident passenger named Chow took a flight from Hong Kong to Osaka, Japan accompanied by his girlfriend and her family. He had 100 banknotes of HK$50,000 meant to be exchanged for Japanese currency for the trip.

Inside the plane, the baggage compartment over him was full but he was asked to put it in any other available place by one of the cabin crew which was around four rows after his seat. He wanted to place it under his seat at first but he was advised otherwise.

However, he said he fell asleep during a period and surprisingly on checking his backpack on arrival in Japan, the bill of Hong Kong dollar notes had been exchanged with Indonesian Rupiah except for the three notes at the top.

The report said the man was left with a total of 153 banknotes of 2,000 Indonesia Rupiah which is equivalent to around HK$153.

Aftermath's complaint that the victim lodged to the Hong Kong Airlines authority was taken as a cabin theft and that passengers should immediately notify the crew to call the forces if they find any belongings being stolen so that the officers could board the aircraft to investigate ahead. The airlines do not have the authority to inspect passengers' belongings,  it was added.

According to the report, as of November 2023, the Airport District Police received 20 reported cases related to cabin theft.
