A 45-year-old Filipino man, who holds a document indicating his opposition to being deported to the Philippines, was fined $1,000 by the Eastern Court on Friday. He pleaded guilty to possessing three tablets and fragments of another tablet of sildenafil, a medication commonly known as Viagra.
Sildenafil is categorized as a Part 1 Poison according to the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance, which makes it illegal to possess the substance without a prescription.
The man, identified as C.K.D., resides in Yuen Long. On October 26 of this year, he was randomly checked at the junction of Canal Road West and Hennesy Road in Wanchai, where the prohibited substance was found in his bag.
After providing his statement on December 15, he appeared in court and admitted to the offense before Magistrate Tang Ching-yiu. Consequently, he was fined.
Viagra, primarily used by men to treat erectile dysfunction, is classified as a prescription drug in numerous countries, including the United States. This classification is due to an ingredient in Viagra that can interact with nitrates found in certain prescription medications, such as nitroglycerin, and potentially cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
However, in some countries like the United Kingdom, Viagra can be purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies.
In accordance with Hong Kong law, the possession of Part 1 poison carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment and a fine of $100,000.
