Photos emerged showing the extent of the damage, with the charging cable still connected.
A case of a Chinese mainland-made electric vehicle that caught fire while charging at an EV charging station in Hong Kong on Thursday night was reported to the police.
According to the report from the source familiar with the case, the 53-year-old woman who was charging her EV on Lam Hing Street in Kowloon Bay at around 9:31 pm made an emergency call after her vehicle exploded while inside and she immediately jumped out.
The emergency services arrived at the scene and controlled the situation on time.
The report said firefighters discovered that nothing was suspicious in the incident and that the cause of the explosion could be a short circuit in the vehicle’s charger.
There were no casualties reported and no evacuation was required, according to police.
The images of the incident that emerged showed the car’s charging cable remained connected to the vehicle, and the front tyres and its bonnet were burned also.
The incident has instigated experts to urge authorities to better educate car owners about EV safety risks.
An expert said that a battery management system should be installed on the EV battery to cut off the power supply immediately when there is a short circuit and urged the government to encourage EV agents to teach owners about the safety risks of their vehicles.
It was further enlightened that EVs might catch fire easily while being charged if the connector was not securely plugged into the charging inlet.
The electric vehicle drivers are also advised not to stay inside the car while charging.
