The death of a boy who fell from a public housing apartment at Yat Tung Estate in Tung Chung on Lantau Island on Monday is being investigated by the Hong Kong police.
Police said an emergency call was made from the public housing on Monday at around 5:25 pm after the non-Chinese boy whose age is around five was found lifeless outside Yu Yat House.
Emergency personnel attended to him at the scene but he was certified dead.
According to the source familiar with the case reported by SCMP, the boy’s mother, 34, left the family’s 12th-floor flat of the building to pick up her seven-year-old daughter from school in the afternoon, leaving her two sons, aged three and five, at home.
However, when she returned home, her two sons were still inside the premises, but one son was said to have been missing thereafter, the report added.
Afterwards, she saw police officers in the vicinity who let her know that her son had fallen from the building.
The woman was arrested for allegedly ill-treated or neglecting a child. The offence is punishable by up to 10 years in jail.
She was released on bail, until further investigation while the detectives from the Lantau district crime squad are in charge to follow up on the case, police said.
