The Australian Federal Police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old man from Hong Kong with possessing and manufacturing methamphetamine. 140kg of the drug was discovered in a makeshift laboratory in a Western Sydney apartment block, AFP reported on their website.
The man was arrested on Friday, 3rd of November, 2023 and remanded in custody until he faced Downing Centre Local Court on 6th of November, 2023, AFP said.
It was explained that the Intelligence shared by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) Narcotics Bureau alerted AFP investigators to a possible criminal syndicate establishing a clandestine laboratory in Sydney.
AFP Investigators used the intelligence provided by the Hong Kong Police Force to trace a member of the criminal syndicate in Western Sydney. It was said that AFP officers eventually executed a search warrant with the assistance of the NSW Police Force Chemical Operations unit at an apartment in Oxley Park on the 3rd of November, 2023.
A clandestine laboratory containing chemicals and paraphernalia was involved in the manufacture and extraction of methamphetamine, alongside 142kg of methamphetamine which police will allege had been manufactured in the apartment, AFP said.
Adding the meth has an estimated street value of A$126,000,000 (HK$630 million)equating to 1,400,000 individual street deals.
Investigators also seized receipts for materials linked to the clandestine laboratory and some electronic devices which will be subject to further forensic examination.
The Hong Kong national was subsequently arrested and charged with Possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug, namely methamphetamine, contrary to subsection 307.5(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth); and
Manufacturing commercial quantities of controlled drugs, namely methamphetamine, contrary to subsection 305.3 (1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).
The maximum penalty for these offences is life imprisonment.
Additionally, the arrest of a 28-year-old man in Sydney and three Hong Kong men for the attempted importation of 240kg meth concealed in fabric rolls on 20th of August, 2023 in Syndey was a result of intelligence provided by HKPF which prompted AFP investigators to establish the links to this syndicate.
AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Jeremy Staunton said the AFP's partnerships with international law enforcement agencies were critical in the fight against organised crime.
