The Center for Health Protection of the Department of Health reported 93 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) infection in the second quarter of 2023, bringing the cumulative total of locally reported HIV infections since 1984 to 11,830.
Of the 93 new cases, 72 were males and 21 were females. The main routes of transmission were homosexual or bisexual contact (41.9%), heterosexual contact (33.3%) and injecting drug use (3.2%). The transmission route of the remaining 20 cases has not been determined due to incomplete information.
Most of the new cases came from public hospitals, clinics and laboratories (47 cases), followed by private hospitals, clinics and laboratories (12 cases), the AIDS team under the Department of Health (11 cases) and the Department of Social Hygiene. Down clinic (11 cases). In addition, 75 (81.5%) of the newly reported HIV-infected individuals had received HIV-specific services from the Department of Health or the Hospital Authority.
In terms of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) cases, 24 new cases were reported during the quarter. Among them, 11 cases (45.8%) were attributed to homosexual or bisexual contact, 11 cases (45.8%) were attributed to heterosexual contact, and 1 case (4.2%) was attributed to injecting drug use. The route of transmission for the remaining cases has not been determined due to insufficient information. Pneumocystis pneumonia remained the most common AIDS-defining illness this quarter. Since 1985, Hong Kong has reported 2,441 confirmed cases of AIDS.
A spokesman for the CHP emphasized that sexual transmission is still the main route of HIV transmission and advised members of the public to continue to use condoms correctly to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Early treatment of HIV with antiretroviral drugs is effective in preventing the development of AIDS and other complications. Lifelong antiretroviral treatment is recommended for all HIV-infected people, as this can significantly improve their health and survival prospects. In addition, individuals who achieve sustained viral suppression through treatment do not transmit the virus through sexual contact. This concept is known as "undetectable = untransmittable" (U=U).
The spokesperson urged individuals with a history of unsafe sex to get tested for HIV antibodies as early as possible. Key groups at higher risk of infection should be regularly screened for HIV, while those who are sexually active but do not belong to these key groups should consider getting tested at least once. Information about free, anonymous and confidential HIV antibody testing can be found on the AIDS Helpline website or AIDS Helpline (2780 2211). People who test positive for HIV should seek specialist care and treatment as soon as possible.
