Recent tests on hair products sold in Hong Kong have revealed that more than 90 per cent of them consist of harmful substances, adding that some of the products tested made up of chemicals in quantities that surpass international standards, consumer watchdog in the city has warned.

Out of the 50 tested locally available hair products, 48 were found to contain harmful chemicals, the Consumer Council said on Monday.

The outcome of the test revealed that products such as Ida Faddy Waxy Cream, SHHH OMG 3.5 Texturizing Wax, and the Deuxer Medium Soft Wax 3 and SHHH OMG 7.0 Volumizing Clay all contained the fragrance allergen butylphenyl methylpropional, which is banned in the European Union due to its reproductive toxicity.

Three products on the list also contained the EU-banned preservative methylisothiazolinone, while the concentration of preservative agent paraben in one hair wax product exceeded limits set by both the trading bloc and mainland China, the result stated.

It was reported that the manufacturer of the SHHH product range said it would improve information on the items’ labels to keep consumers informed.

The watchdog also found a hairspray that it tested had a volatile organic compounds concentration of 77 per cent. Hong Kong’s regulatory limit is 55 per cent.

Several other products contained fragrance allergens such as linalool and limonene at levels that would require warning labels if sold in the EU.

Hair waxes were found to contain the highest number of EU-prohibited fragrance allergens and preservatives, with seven shown to have prohibited or restricted preservatives and three including a prohibited fragrance allergen.

In this regard, the authority has urged consumers to check ingredients, usage instructions and labelling information before buying such products, especially if the user has a history of eczema or sensitive skin.

It was advised that all necessary precautions should be taken when using the hair products.
