6.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Eastern Indonesia, No Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the eastern region of Indonesia, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Fortunately, no tsunami alert was issued in the aftermath of the seismic event.

The earthquake originated off Halmahera island in North Maluku province at approximately 09:48 GMT. Its epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles), as reported by the USGS. So far, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage caused by the earthquake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has confirmed that there is no imminent threat of a tsunami resulting from this earthquake in the Molucca Sea.

However, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) has urged residents in nearby areas to remain cautious and be prepared for possible aftershocks.

Indonesia, being situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," is frequently subjected toearthquakes due to its location along the tectonic plate boundaries. The "Ring of Fire" is an area of intense seismic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

Indonesia has a history of devastating earthquakes. In January 2021, a magnitude-6.2 earthquake struck Sulawesi island, claiming the lives of over 100 people and displacing thousands. In 2018, a magnitude-7.5 earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit Palu on Sulawesi, resulting in the loss of more than 2,200 lives. The most catastrophic earthquake in recent history occurred in 2004 when a magnitude-9.1 quake struck Aceh province, triggering a devastating tsunami that claimed the lives of over 170,000 people in Indonesia.

Authorities and disaster management agencies continue to emphasize the importance of preparedness and awareness among residents in earthquake-prone areas. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) plays a crucial role in monitoring seismic activity and providing timely updates and warnings to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.

It is essential for individuals and communities to stay informed about earthquake safety measures, including evacuation procedures and emergency kits, in order to minimize the potential loss of life and property during seismic events.
