According to a senior climate expert from China, the country, which has been experiencing one of its coldest Decembers on record, may face another period of intense heat and increased extreme weather next year due to the El Nino weather phenomenon.
China has witnessed a fluctuation in temperatures this year, ranging from some of the highest temperatures recorded since 1850 to a severe cold snap that caused significant freezing across various regions for nearly two weeks earlier this month.
Zhou Bing, the chief expert at China's National Climate Center, stated that "2024 may be hotter, and it could also be a year when extreme weather may become more frequent and powerful," as reported by broadcaster CCTV.
During the previous summer, Beijing endured record-breaking heat, while a remote township in the dry northwest of the country experienced a day with a temperature of 52 degrees Celsius, the highest recorded in China. Additionally, typhoons resulted in unprecedented rainfall in the northern parts of the country, leading to flooding.
El Nino refers to a phenomenon that occurs every two to seven years when the waters near the equator in the Pacific become warmer than usual, resulting in heavy rainfall, storms, or droughts in various regions worldwide.
This year's El Nino began in June and has caused new temperature records to be set globally. Weather experts predict that El Nino could weaken between April and June, but since its effects take months to manifest, there is a possibility of more temperature records being broken in 2024.
