The Hong Kong Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk who was on an interview with RTHK's Wednesday said that 2,000 surveillance cameras that would cover the city to be installed by the end of 2024 to guard against the crime.
Cheuk emphasized in the RTHK's overview Policy programme that Hong Kong is a safe city. However, the installation of more CCTV cameras across the city would help officers to keep track of crime.
He said "The surveillance cameras will be installed in places with a high flow of people and places evaluated as high risk by officers. But the cameras may not be put there permanently, if needed, they may be moved to other places too."
"This can also improve governance at the district level. If someone wants to commit a crime, can they dodge so many surveillance cameras?" he questioned.
The Deputy Chief Secretary said 600 surveillance cameras would be in place by the middle of 2024 and the rest by the end of the year. He explained that he understood the privacy worries of some people's privacy but pointed out that many other countries had more video surveillance technology cameras than Hong Kong.
