Hong Kong exam authorities have stepped up the screening after discovering about 20 cases of people who used forged DSE certificates to apply for university in Macau, Education Minister Christine Yuk-lin said Choi on Saturday.
The education minister spoke on a radio programme and warned that if any other possible findings of fake academic credentials in connection to Hong Kong’s university entrance exam came to light, police would be informed, and the students involved could have their degrees revoked.
“Using a fake document is a serious crime, which can result in the maximum penalty of a 14-year jail sentence,” she told a radio programme on Saturday.
Choi said the Macau University of Science and Technology contacted authorities in Hong Kong after receiving applications from about 20 students holding suspicious DSE certificates.
“Upon their suspicion, they sought verification from the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA),” she said.
"This is outrageous. There were 20 fake DSE certificates. For anyone who has doubts about the DSE results, we can help. The HKEAA keeps a record of the DSE results and can help verify them," Choi said.
Choi said examination authorities had already filed a police report.
“There is a price to pay for using these fake instruments,” she said.
She urged universities to contact the HKEAA if they had any doubts about applicants’ DSE credentials.
